Granuloma Annulare

Granuloma Annulare on Arm

Granuloma Annulare, although harmless - can create unsightly lesions affecting your appearance.

Symptoms

The “rings” associated with this type of Granuloma are normally raised, and can be white, skin-colored, red or purple in appearance. The center is usually clear. These lesions normally appear on the tops of the hands, feet, elbows and knees. Although we have grouped this skin condition under Skin Rashes, it is normally not itchy, although some people may experience very mild itching.

The condition is sometimes confused with ringworm, and since the treatments for each are different, it’s usually a good idea to be examined by a medical professional to determine the true nature of the skin condition. In severe cases, these rings can develop over much of the body.

The condition will usually disappear on its own within a few months to a few years. Women seem to be about twice as likely as men to develop the problem, and young adults and children also seem to be at more risk.

Causes

The cause of this skin condition is unknown. However, for some people there may be a connection with diabetes and/or a thyroid condition, but this remains unproven.

Granuloma Annulare on Hand Treatment

Treatment options can include:

  • Corticosteroid Creams or ointments can help to improve the appearance of the condition and speed up the recovery process. If directed by your doctor, covering the cream will help to increase the potency of the treatment.
  • Corticosteroid Injections into thicker lesions may speed their disappearance.
  • PUVA (Psoralen Enhanced Ultraviolet Light Type A) phototherapy may be used in more severe or “generalized” cases.
